Day 277: Sustained by Spirit

554:8-556:2

mind in matter is the author of itself, and is simply a falsity and illusion

Error would have itself received as mind, as if it were as real and God-created as truth; but Christian Science attributes to error neither entity nor power, because error is neither mind nor the outcome of Mind.

Truth fosters the idea of Truth, and not the belief in illusion or error. That which is real, is sustained by Spirit.

Day 268: Genesis iii.22-24

536:30-538:22

Error excludes itself from harmony. Sin is its own punishment. Truth guards the gateway to harmony.

The literal meaning would imply that God withheld from man the opportunity to reform, lest man should improve it and become better; but this is not the nature of God, who is Love always,-- Love infinitely wise and altogether lovely, who "seeketh not her own."

Day 230: Truth and Healing

455:3-457:6

One must abide in the morale of truth or he cannot demonstrate the divine Principle. So long as matter is the basis of practice, illness cannot be efficaciously treated by the metaphysical process. Truth does the work, and you must both understand and abide by the divine Principle of your demonstration.

God selects for the highest service [healing others] one who has grown into such a fitness for it as renders any abuse of the mission an impossibility. The All-wise does not bestow His highest trusts upon the unworthy. When He commissions a messenger, it is one who is spiritually near Himself. No person can misuse this mental power, if he is taught of God to discern it.

Day 192: Truth vs. Illusion

379-381:7

Nothing but the power of Truth can prevent the fear of error, and prove man's dominion over error.

Be no more willing to suffer the illusion that you are sick or that some disease is developing in the system, than you are to yield to a sinful temptation on the ground that sin has its necessities.

Day 188: Uplifting the Race

371:5-372:32

The necessity for is father to the fact that Mind can do it; for Mind can impart purity instead of impurity, strength instead of weakness, and health instead of disease. Truth is an alterative in the entire system, and can make it "every whit whole."

Day 186: Christian Science, aflame with divine Love

366:30-369:4

This is what is meant by seeking Truth, Christ, not "for the loaves and fishes," nor, like the Pharisee, with the arrogance of rank and display of scholarship, but like Mary Magdalene, from the summit of devout consecration, with the oil of gladness and the perfume of gratitude, with tears of repentance and with those hairs all numbered by the Father.

Because Truth is infinite, error should be known as nothing. Because Truth is omnipotent in goodness, error, Truth's opposite, has no might. Evil is but the counterpoise of nothingness. The greatest wrong is but a supposititious opposite of the highest right. The confidence inspired by Science lies in the fact that Truth is real and error is unreal.

Day 147: Mini-treatment - Sin, Sickness, & Death

286:9-288:8

Sin, sickness, and death are comprised in human material belief, and belong not to the divine Mind. There are without a real origin or existence. They have neither Principle nor permanence, but belong, with all that is material and temporal, to the nothingness of error, which simulates the creations of Truth. All creations of Spirit are eternal; but creations of matter must return to dust. Error supposes man to be both mental and material. Divine Science contradicts this postulate and maintains man's spiritual identity.

Day 140: Truth & Matter

272:3-273:28

The spiritual sense of truth must be gained before Truth can be understood. This sense is assimilated only as we are honest, unselfish, loving, and meek.

Divine Science reverses the false testimony of the material senses, and thus tears away the foundations of error.

There is no material truth. The physical senses can take no cognizance of God and spiritual Truth.

It is the spiritualization of thought and Christianization of daily life, in contrast with the results of the ghastly farce of material existence; it is chastity and purity, in contrast with the downward tendencies and earthward gravitation of sensualism and impurity, which really attest the divine origin and operation of Christian Science.

Man is harmonious when governed by Soul. Hence the importance of understanding the truth of being, which reveals the laws of spiritual existence.

Day 130: The Journey

253:18-254:32

If you venture upon the quiet surface of error and are in sympathy with error, what is there to disturb the waters? What is there to strip off error's disguise?

If you launch your bark upon the ever-agitated but healthful waters of truth, you will encounter storms. Your good will be evil spoken of. This is the cross. Take it up and bear it, for through it you win

Day 72: Christianity Explained

135:21-138:16

This reading explains Christian Science from a historical perspective. Jesus had to eventually explain it:

Christianity … [is] the demonstration of divine Love casting out error and healing the sick, not merely in the name of Christ, or Truth but in demonstration of Truth, as must be the case in the cycles of divine light.

He asked his disciples who or what he was? Simon replied:

Thou are the Christ, the Son of the living God!

His method for healing:

He showed that diseases were cast out neither by corporeality, by materia medica, nor by hygiene, but by the divine Spirit, casting out the errors of mortal mind.

Day 69: Material belief & False evidence

130:7-131:11

While looking for the perfectibility of man, I came across these:

Christian Science, properly understood, would disabuse the human mind of material beliefs which war against spiritual facts; and these material beliefs must be denied and cast out to make place for truth. You cannot add to the contents of a vessel already full.

When once destroyed by divine Science, the false evidence before the corporeal senses disappears.

Day 58: Christian Science on 1 Page

107:1-109:31

Mary Baker Eddy presents a complete picture of Christian Science with two separate paragraphs.

It was the divine law of Life and Love, unfolding to me the demonstrable fact that matter possesses neither sensation nor life, that human experiences show the falsity of all material things, and that immortal cravings, “the price of learning love,” establish the truism that the only sufferer is mortal mind, for the divine Mind cannot suffer.

…the opposite of Truth, – called error, sin, sickness, disease, death, – is the false testimony of false material sense, of mind in matter; that this false sense evolves, in belief, a subjective state of mortal mind which this same so-called mind names matter, thereby shutting out the true sense of Spirit.

Day 57: Self-government

105:22-106:29

Man is properly self-governed only when he is guided rightly and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love.

Day 23:

37:32-39:30

He taught that the material senses shut out Truth and its healing power.

Day 15:

22:3-24:3

I don’t want the pendulum swing in my progress. I will search out areas of my thought and actions where Truth and Love are not understood and practiced.

Day 14: Truth & Honesty

20:6-22:2

The idea that truth commands sure entrance into the realm of Love is interesting because it isn’t capital T – Truth. Mary Baker Eddy also writes if we are honest, we will be earnest from the start and gain a little each day.

Truth and honesty aren’t spiritual concepts as much as self-awareness. Whatever they are,  it is easy to believe I’ve tackled those and that I need to look for other areas to pray about – but that wouldn’t be the honest truth.

Day 9: Habitual Desire

11:5-13:4

On Day 6, the quote about God pouring riches of His Love by affections has been on my mind. I’ve been looking for those affections and as a tradeoff been spotting my own human will and ignoring it. Not easy. I have a list of things I want to get done but I have kids – who require affection from me and have boat loads of human will. But I’ve been just going with it. Something like this:

prayer, coupled with a fervent habitual desire to know and do the will of God, will bring us into all Truth.

Day 315: Truth Book

635:18-637:13

Most of the testimonies give as fact the only reason the person read the book is because the medical community said a case was incurable. The person had nothing to lose by reading the book. Once they started reading, some a few pages in, some a chapter or two in, felt that the truth in this book resonated with them. It felt natural and right and they agreed with it because it was what they had felt the truth was before they picked the book up and read it.

I don’t know if other people in other religions feel that way, that the theology so closely matches what they already believed. I supposed it would make sense if they did.

However, in an effort to get even closer to the Truth, I’ve looked at other religions and spiritual practices for myself. I keep coming back to Christian Science because it does reflect what I internally feel the Truth is.

I enjoyed this testimony so much because that is what the called the book: Truth Book.

Day 296: Superstructure of Truth

595:7-597:15

The terms in this reading forced me to consider my own rites and ceremonies. What veil do I wear and what superstructure of Truth do I expect to find while wearing it?

I wonder how Mary Baker Eddy expected people to use this Glossary. Were the newbies supposed to flip to it while reading the book, in order to understand her text? Or was it meant as an explanation of sorts of Christian Science, a cheat-sheet? I ask that because I didn’t know what Thummim and Urim (MBE definitions) are or how they apply to the book or Christian Science. They seem sort of plopped in here without context or explanation.

Day 281: The Subtle Serpent

562:22-565:5

The great red dragon in the Apocalypse and the talking snake in Genesis are compared in this reading. The great red dragon is scary and standing there waiting to be noticed in his massiveness while the talking snake is just a lowly, snake – almost avoidable.

Mary Bakery Eddy uses the word harmony twice in this reading. I can see how both the snake and the dragon are totally about disrupting harmony. If you get by the snake, there’s always the dragon. You won’t ever make it by him – so he wants you to think.

I marked the questions MBE poses at the top of 563 because when she writes out the issues like that, they seem silly, and I remember they’re silly. Which helps – when I see the dragon.
