The Science of the first record proves the falsity of the second. If one is true, the other is false, for they are antagonistic. The first record assigns all might and government to God, and endows man out of God's perfection and power. The second record chronicles man as mutable and mortal,--as having broken away from Deity and as revolving in an orbit of his own. Existence, separate from divinity, Science explains as impossible.
Although presenting the exact opposite of Truth, the lie claims to be truth. The creations of matter arise from a mist or false claim, or from mystification, and not from the firmament, or understanding, which God erects between the true and false.

Day 260: Genesis ii.6

Day 254: Genesis i.14-16
So-called mineral, vegetable, and animal substances are no more contingent now on time or material structure than they were when "the morning stars sang together."
turn away from a false material sense
Love alone can impart the limitless idea of infinite Mind.

Day 244: Today’s Question
Is materiality the concomitant of spirituality, and is material sense a necessary preliminary to the understanding and expression of Spirit?
Emerge gently from matter into Spirit. Think not to thwart the spiritual ultimate of all things, but come naturally into Spirit through better health and morals and as the result of spiritual growth.
If thought yields its dominion to other powers, it cannot outline on the body its own beautiful images, but it effaces them and delineates foreign agents, called disease and sin.
In reality man never dies. The belief that he dies will not establish his scientific harmony. Death is not the result of Truth but of error, and one error will not correct another.
Sight, hearing, all the spiritual senses of man, are eternal. They cannot be lost. Their reality and immortality are in Spirit and understanding, not in matter,--hence their permanence.

Day 241: Today’s Questions
What are body and Soul? answer
Soul is the substance, Life, and intelligence of man, which is individualized, but not in matter.
Does brain think, and do nerves feel, and is there intelligence in matter? answer (answer cont’d tomorrow)
Matter cannot see, feel, hear, taste, nor smell. It is not self-cognizant,--cannot feel itself, see itself, nor understand itself. Take away so-called mortal mind, which constitutes matter's supposed selfhood, and matter can take no cognizance of matter.

Day 215: God is more than Belief
Mortal man will be less mortal, when he learns that matter never sustained existence and can never destroy God, who is man's Life. When this is understood, mankind will be more spiritual and know that there is nothing to consume, since Spirit, God, is All-in-all. What if the belief is consumption? God is more to a man than his belief, and the less we acknowledge matter or its laws, the more immortality we possess. Consciousness constructs a better body when faith in matter has been conquered. Correct material belief by spiritual understanding, and Spirit will form you anew. You will never fear again except to offend God, and you will never believe that heart or any portion of the body can destroy you.

Day 203: Self-Government
Sometime it will be learned that mortal mind constructs the mortal body with this mind's own mortal materials.
we rarely remember that we govern our own bodies
self-mesmerism is induced unconsciously and by his mistake a man is often instructed

Day 201: No Materiality to Heal
To heal the sick, one must be familiar with the great verities of being. Mortals are no more material in their waking hours than when they act, walk, see, hear, enjoy, or suffer in dreams.

Day 199: Law of mind or Mind?
Sometimes it is easy to confuse mortal mind and material senses with the physical form, since the erroneous belief says that they are inseparable. But Mary Baker Eddy reminds us:
The body seems to be self-acting, only because mortal mind is ignorant of itself, of its own actions, and of their results,--ignorant that the predisposing, remote, and exciting cause of all bad effects is a law of so-called mortal mind, not of matter.
Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation.
A false belief is both the tempter and the tempted, the sin and the sinner, the disease and its cause.
The sick unconsciously argue for suffering, instead of against it. They admit its reality, whereas they should deny it. They should plead in opposition to the testimony of the deceitful senses, and maintain man's immortality and eternal likeness to God.
The admission that any bodily condition is beyond the control of Mind disarms man, prevents him from helping himself, and enthrones matter through error.
We should remember that Life is God, and that God is omnipotent.

Day 172: Eternal things
Eternal things (verities) are God's thoughts as they exist in the spiritual realm of the real. Temporal things are the thoughts of mortals and are the unreal, being the opposite of the real or the spiritual and eternal.

Day 159: False Beliefs
Through false estimates of soul as dwelling in sense and of mind as dwelling in matter, belief strays into a sense of temporary loss or absence of soul, spiritual truth. This state of error is the mortal dream of life and substance as existent in matter, and is directly opposite to the immortal reality of being.
Matter is made up of supposititious mortal mind-force;but all might is divine Mind. Thought will finally be understood and seen in all form, substance, and color, but without material accompaniments.
Matter, sin, and mortality lose all supposed consciousness or claim to life or existence, as mortals lay off a false sense of life, substance, and intelligence. But the spiritual, eternal man is not touched by these phases of mortality.

Day 153: Finite sense
Material sense expresses the belief that mind is in matter. This human belief, alternating between a sense of pleasure and pain, hope and fear, life and death, never reaches beyond the boundary of the mortal or the unreal.
Finite sense has no true appreciation of infinite Principle, God, or of His infinite image or reflection, man.

Day 148: Postulates of Christian Science
To suppose that sin, lust, hatred, envy, hypocrisy, revenge, have life abiding in them, is a terrible mistake. Life and Life's idea, Truth and Truth's idea, never make men sick, sinful, or mortal.
The spiritual fact and the material belief of things are contradictions; but the spiritual is true, and therefore the material must be untrue.
The chief stones in the temple of Christian Science are to be found in the following postulates: that Life is God, good, and not evil; that Soul is sinless, not be found in the body; that Spirit is not, and cannot be, materialized; that Life is not subject to death; that the spiritual real man has no birth, no material life, and no death.

Day 145: No Matter
Eternal Mind and temporary material existence never unite in figure or in fact. A straight line finds no abiding-place in a curve, and a curve finds no adjustment to a straight line. Similarly, matter has no place in Spirit, and Spirit has no place in matter.
There is no inherent power in matter; for all that is material is a material, human, mortal thought, always governing itself erroneously.
As mortals begin to understand Spirit, they give up the belief that there is any true existence apart from God.
Day 144: Inspiration Found
Divine Science does not put new wine into old bottles, Soul into matter, nor the infinite into the finite. Our false views of matter perish as we grasp the facts of Spirit. The old belief must be cast out or the new idea will be spilled, and the inspiration, which is to change our standpoint, will be lost.
I’m going to step aside from Mary Baker Eddy for just a moment here. I think the above quote might give one the impression that it is either now or never. The boat is leaving and you need to be on it. But I’ve known so many people with a spiritual path that wasn’t straight and had many potholes. Matter is a difficult belief to work through on the road of Spirituality.
I don’t think God ever gives up on us and his inspiration is never lost. Ours shouldn’t be either. Trust in God, yourself, and your fellow man.

Day 143: Spirit, not matter
as we approach Spirit and Truth, we lose the consciousness of matter
In proportion as the belief disappears that life and intelligence are in or of matter, the immortal facts of being are seen, and their only idea or intelligence is in God.
Spirit, God, is infinite, all. Spirit can have no opposite.

Day 140: Truth & Matter
The spiritual sense of truth must be gained before Truth can be understood. This sense is assimilated only as we are honest, unselfish, loving, and meek.
Divine Science reverses the false testimony of the material senses, and thus tears away the foundations of error.
There is no material truth. The physical senses can take no cognizance of God and spiritual Truth.
It is the spiritualization of thought and Christianization of daily life, in contrast with the results of the ghastly farce of material existence; it is chastity and purity, in contrast with the downward tendencies and earthward gravitation of sensualism and impurity, which really attest the divine origin and operation of Christian Science.
Man is harmonious when governed by Soul. Hence the importance of understanding the truth of being, which reveals the laws of spiritual existence.

Day 117: Dishonor God
The illusion of material sense, not divine law, has bound you, entangled your free limbs, crippled your capacities, enfeebled your body, and defaced the tablet of your being.
The transmission of disease or of certain idiosyncrasies of mortal mind would be impossible if this great fact of being were learned,--namely, that nothing inharmonious can enter being, for Life is God.
There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God.
Thursday, May 5, 2011
Day 115: Justice
Matter does not express Spirit.
Whatever enslaves man is opposed to the divine government.
A higher and more practical Christianity, demonstrating justice and meeting the needs of mortals in sickness and in health, stands at the door of this age, knocking for admission.

Day 94: Government & Belief
When man is governed by God, the ever-present Mind who understands all things, man knows that with God all things are possible.
Matter, which can neither suffer nor enjoy, has no partnership with pain and pleasure, but mortal belief has such a partnership.

Day 276: Material Source
This chapter is about the two stories in Genesis. It seems to me if someone picks up this book for spiritual growth, they will understand the significant difference between the two stories. If they are reading this book for a quick and thoughtless healing, they might as well go to a doctor because they aren’t getting the point. But since Mary Baker Eddy does spend so much time on the science of the story, I assume she thinks there might be a third kind of audience reading the book – someone who cares very much about the science of materiality. You can get loads of inspiration or insight if material science if taken figuratively but the true meeting of material science and spirituality is usually a disaster.
From a material source flows no remedy for sorrow, sin, and death, for the redeeming power, from the ills they occasion, is not in egg or in dust.
