Day 294: Error
Tuesday, September 20, 2011
Day 260: Genesis ii.6
The Science of the first record proves the falsity of the second. If one is true, the other is false, for they are antagonistic. The first record assigns all might and government to God, and endows man out of God's perfection and power. The second record chronicles man as mutable and mortal,--as having broken away from Deity and as revolving in an orbit of his own. Existence, separate from divinity, Science explains as impossible.
Although presenting the exact opposite of Truth, the lie claims to be truth. The creations of matter arise from a mist or false claim, or from mystification, and not from the firmament, or understanding, which God erects between the true and false.

Day 238: Today’s Questions
Are doctrines and creeds a benefit to man? answer
- God is the only Life
- God is to be understood, adored,
- divine Truth casts out suppositional error and heals the sick and demonstrated
What is error? answer
- supposition that pleasure and pain, that intelligence, substance, life, are existent in matter
- neither Mind nor one of Mind's faculties
- the contradiction of Truth
- a belief without understanding
- unreal
- because untrue
- that which seemeth to be and is not

Day 234: Decide Proper Treatment
To decide quickly as to the proper treatment of error-- whether error is manifested in forms of sickness, sin, or death--is the first step towards destroying error. Our Master treated error through Mind. He never enjoined obedience to the laws of nature, if by these are meant laws of matter, nor did he use drugs. There is a law of God applicable to healing, and it is a spiritual law instead of material. The sick are not healed by inanimate matter or drugs, as they believe that they are. Such seeming medical effect or action is that of so-called mortal mind.

Day 191: Remove the Error
Because a belief originates unseen, the mental state should be continually watched that it may not produce blindly its bad effects.
Remove the leading error or governing fear of this lower so-called mind, and you remove the cause of all disease as well as the morbid or excited action of any organ.
Remove the error, and you destroy its effects.
God never endowed matter with power to disable Life or to chill harmony with a long and cold night of discord. Such a power, without the divine permission, is inconceivable; and if such a power could be divinely directed, it would manifest less wisdom than we usually find displayed in human governments.

Day 179: Personal Devil
We cannot bring out the practical proof of Christianity, which Jesus required, while error seems as potent and real to us as Truth, and while we make a personal devil and an anthropomorphic God our starting-points,--especially if we consider Satan as a being coequal in power with Deity, if not superior to Him. Because such starting-points are neither spiritual nor scientific, they cannot work out the Spirit-rule of Christian healing, which proves the nothingness of error, discord, by demonstrating the all-inclusiveness of harmonious Truth.

Day 167: The Way to Escape Sin
What a pitiful sight is malice, finding pleasure in revenge! Evil is sometimes a man's highest conception of right, until his grasp on good grows stronger. Then he loses pleasure in wickedness, and it becomes his torment. The way to escape the misery of sin is to cease sinning. There is no other way. Sin is the image of the beast to be effaced by the sweat of agony. It is a moral madness which rushes forth to clamor with midnight and tempest.

Day 159: False Beliefs
Through false estimates of soul as dwelling in sense and of mind as dwelling in matter, belief strays into a sense of temporary loss or absence of soul, spiritual truth. This state of error is the mortal dream of life and substance as existent in matter, and is directly opposite to the immortal reality of being.
Matter is made up of supposititious mortal mind-force;but all might is divine Mind. Thought will finally be understood and seen in all form, substance, and color, but without material accompaniments.
Matter, sin, and mortality lose all supposed consciousness or claim to life or existence, as mortals lay off a false sense of life, substance, and intelligence. But the spiritual, eternal man is not touched by these phases of mortality.

Day 150: Material Sense
The five physical senses are the avenues and instruments of human error, and they correspond with error. These senses indicate the common human belief, that life, substance, and intelligence are a unison of matter with Spirit. This is pantheism, and carries within itself the seeds of all error. If man is both mind and matter, the loss of one finger would take away some quality and quantity of the man, for matter and man would be one.

Day 130: The Journey
If you venture upon the quiet surface of error and are in sympathy with error, what is there to disturb the waters? What is there to strip off error's disguise?
If you launch your bark upon the ever-agitated but healthful waters of truth, you will encounter storms. Your good will be evil spoken of. This is the cross. Take it up and bear it, for through it you win

Day 107: Turning a corner
In my opinion, the book has turned a corner from introductory material to the meat of the theology. If you have made it this far, put your thinking cap on and pay close attention to what Mary Baker Eddy says. She has some real gems hidden in the text.
I pulled some ideas from the reading.
We must learn that evil is the awful deception and unreality of existence.
The original wording for this next one is:
The spiritual reality is the scientific fact in all things.
But I rewrote it. Does it make it clearer or change its meaning?
The scientific fact is the spiritual reality in all things.
Grabbed the core idea and removed the other words:
Error of belief = embracing sin, sickness, and death
I don’t really think most people embrace sin, sickness, and death but they embrace the road that took them there.
It is the mortal belief which makes the body discordant and diseased in proportion as ignorance, fear, or human will governs mortals.
Of those three, ignorance, fear, and human will, the last is most often the culprit.

Day 104: Disrobe Error
We cannot fill vessels already full. They must first be emptied. Let us disrobe error. Then, when the winds of God blow, we shall not hug our tatters close about us.

Day 72: Christianity Explained
This reading explains Christian Science from a historical perspective. Jesus had to eventually explain it:
Christianity … [is] the demonstration of divine Love casting out error and healing the sick, not merely in the name of Christ, or Truth but in demonstration of Truth, as must be the case in the cycles of divine light.
He asked his disciples who or what he was? Simon replied:
Thou are the Christ, the Son of the living God!
His method for healing:
He showed that diseases were cast out neither by corporeality, by materia medica, nor by hygiene, but by the divine Spirit, casting out the errors of mortal mind.

Day 58: Christian Science on 1 Page
Mary Baker Eddy presents a complete picture of Christian Science with two separate paragraphs.
It was the divine law of Life and Love, unfolding to me the demonstrable fact that matter possesses neither sensation nor life, that human experiences show the falsity of all material things, and that immortal cravings, “the price of learning love,” establish the truism that the only sufferer is mortal mind, for the divine Mind cannot suffer.
…the opposite of Truth, – called error, sin, sickness, disease, death, – is the false testimony of false material sense, of mind in matter; that this false sense evolves, in belief, a subjective state of mortal mind which this same so-called mind names matter, thereby shutting out the true sense of Spirit.

Day 50: Error or Evil
The mistake of thinking that error can be real, when it is merely the absence of truth, leads to belief in the superiority of error.
Good does not create a mind susceptible of causing evil, for evil is the opposing error and not the truth of creation.

Day 25: Word Choice
The belief that man has existence or mind separate from God is a dying error.
I can’t stop looking at this sentence. I think I’ve been misunderstanding it for years. Instead of pointing out a belief that is coming to an end because it is wrong (my previous thought), what about the erroneous belief causes the result of death?
Did everyone see that but me all these years? I’ll be in the corner with the dunce cap on.

Day 18: The Author of Man
Mary Baker Eddy says
Christians must take up arms against error at home and abroad. They must grapple with sin in themselves and in others
And
God is the only author of man.
It is so important to remember the error, sin that is within or without, isn’t from God and isn’t real. It’s nothingness will be its undoing.

Day 7: False Claims
In the first paragraph, Mary Baker Eddy writes
The relinquishment of error deprives material sense of is false claims.
This is stated so succinctly that I wanted to remember it here.

Day 336: Don’t Consent to Error
Today’s testimony has a way with words. The first idea is:
I have been able to overcome many errors.
Other testimonies mention health or physical healings but this testimony is more accurate. Then the person had to move away from the East Coast for a change in climate. While he might have been thinking about moisture or cold, in truth, it was a new mental climate he was looking for. Then he read Mary Baker Eddy’s quote regarding food:
neither food nor the stomach, without the consent of mortal mind, can make one suffer
The consent of mortal mind is us, me. We have to consent to error in order for error to be effective. I’ve been watching my thinking very closely to see where it runs away from spirituality. Not pulling it back in is another form of consent.
