Day 209: To Heal By Argument

To prevent disease or to cure it, the power of Truth, of divine Spirit, must break the dream of the material senses. To heal by argument, find the type of the ailment, get its name, and array your mental plea against the physical. Argue at first mentally, not audibly, that the patient has no disease, and conform the argument so as to destroy the evidence of disease. Mentally insist that harmony is the fact, and that sickness is a temporal dream. Realize the presence of health and the fact of harmonious being, until the body corresponds with the normal conditions of health and harmony.

Day 208: Destroy Human Fear of Sickness

410:22-412:15

The procuring cause and foundation of all sickness is fear, ignorance, or sin. Disease is always induced by a false sense mentally entertained, not destroyed. Disease is an image of thought externalized. The mental state is called a material state. Whatever is cherished in mortal mind as the physical condition is imaged forth on the body. Always begin your treatment by allaying the fear of patients. Silently reassure them as to their exemption from disease and danger.

The great fact that God lovingly governs all, never punishing aught but sin, is your standpoint, from which to advance and destroy the human fear of sickness. Mentally and silently plead the case scientifically for Truth.

The power of Christian Science and divine Love is omnipotent. It is indeed adequate to unclasp the hold and to destroy disease, sin, and death.

If the Scientist has enough Christly affection to win his own pardon, and such commendation as the Magdalen gained from Jesus, then he is Christian enough to practise scientifically and deal with his patients compassionately; and the result will correspond with the spiritual intent.

the Christian Scientist will be calm in the presence of both sin and disease, knowing, as he does, that Life is God and God is All.

Day 147: Mini-treatment - Sin, Sickness, & Death

Sin, sickness, and death are comprised in human material belief, and belong not to the divine Mind. There are without a real origin or existence. They have neither Principle nor permanence, but belong, with all that is material and temporal, to the nothingness of error, which simulates the creations of Truth. All creations of Spirit are eternal; but creations of matter must return to dust. Error supposes man to be both mental and material. Divine Science contradicts this postulate and maintains man's spiritual identity.

What renders both sin and sickness difficult of cure is, that the human mind is the sinner, disinclined to self-correction, and believing that the body can be sick independently of mortal mind and that the divine Mind has no jurisdiction over the body.

Treat a belief in sickness as you would sin, with sudden dismissal. Resist the temptation to believe in matter as intelligent, as having sensation or power.

Insist vehemently on the great fact which covers the whole ground, that God, Spirit, is all, and that there is none beside Him.

A few points about treatment:

By the truthful arguments you employ, and especially by the spirit of Truth and Love which you entertain, you will heal the sick.

Include moral as well as physical belief in your efforts to destroy error. Cast out all manner of evil.

Observe mind instead of body, lest aught unfit for development enter thought. Think less of material conditions and more of spiritual.

Then something that seemed more about my struggles with harmony:

There is no metastatis, no stoppage of harmonious action, no paralysis. Truth not error, Love not hate, Spirit not matter, governs man.

I was surprised by the section title (also this post’s title) because I didn’t remember it. I took class instruction and somewhere in the back of my mind thought I learned about treatments in class, not in Science & Health. Why do I think that? I have no idea. A few points stuck out for me:

Day 97: The Absense of God

These two pages continue the treatment so this is day three or 6 pages of patient treatment. I read this section twice and here is what I got out of it:

Error or evil leads to the belief of no God which man incorrectly then elevates his own mind and therefore this body.

The above is my own paraphrasing and not something Mary Baker Eddy wrote. Here is what I underlined:

It [evil] is unreal, because it presupposes the absence of God, the omnipotent and omnipresent.

The human mind has been an idolater from the beginning having other gods and believing in more than the one Mind.

Here you may see how so-called material sense creates its own forms of thought, gives them material names, and then worships and fears them. 

What did you get out of these two pages? A different line of thought?

These two pages read like a treatment of sorts. I underlined several things but in honesty I just want to read the whole two pages over and over because I think there is a lot here and a casual read doesn't get to it.


I'm going to list what I underlined all at once:

the legitimate and only possible action of Truth is the production of harmony

 Obedience to Truth gives man power and strength. Submission to error superinduces loss of power.

The remedy consists of probing the trouble to the bottom, in finding and casting out by denial the error of belief which produces a mortal disorder, never honoring erroneous belief with the title of law nor yielding obedience to it. Truth, Life, and Love are the only legitimate and eternal demands on man, and they are spiritual lawgivers, enforcing obedience through divine statutes.
